ERG 101

ERG 101

ERG 101

Overview

ERG 101 is an interactive e-learning module that was created to educate employees at a mid-sized tech company about Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and to help them create and submit proposals for starting their own ERG.

I authored the module in Articulate Rise and Storyline 360 and used other tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Character Animator, After Effects, Media Encoder, and Audacity.

Note: I have obtained written authorization from my previous employer to showcase ERG101 as a sample of my work on my portfolio. The module has been slightly modified to remove any confidential information, but the overall structure and content remain the same. I have changed the name of the company to “Kandu” which is Farsi word for beehive.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Communicate the value and benefits of ERGs,
  • Identify the requirements and processes for proposing an ERG at their organization,
  • Develop an ERG charter and a first-year plan of action,
  • Generate a rationale for senior leadership to support their proposed ERG.

Primary and Secondary Audience

This module was designed for employees at a mid-sized tech company who are interested in learning about Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and how to create an ERG charter and proposal. It is suitable for employees at all levels of the organization, from entry-level to senior executives.

Additionally, this module may be useful for HR professionals or diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) leaders who are responsible for promoting diversity and inclusion in their organization and want to learn more about the benefits of ERGs and how to support employees in starting new ERGs.

Instructional design approach

The ERG 101 module was designed with a focus on creating an engaging and interactive learning experience that would help learners develop a strong understanding of employee resource groups and the process of starting an ERG. The instructional design approach was centered around creating bite-sized and engaging content that would meet the learners’ needs and is easy to navigate and understand.

The module included real-life examples allowing learners to see how the content could be applied in their own context, and there are simple games that serve as low-stakes knowledge checks to keep the learners engaged and reinforce their understanding of the content.

The module also includes a charter template to simplify the process of writing proposals and a checklist to ensure that learners have covered all the necessary elements in their ERG proposal.

Accessibility considerations

“ERG 101” was designed with accessibility in mind, to ensure that all learners, including those with disabilities, can participate in the learning experience.

The course was built to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards, which include considerations for users with visual, hearing, and mobility impairments. There are closed captions, transcripts, and audio descriptions to ensure that learners with hearing impairments can access the content. The use of color and contrast was also considered to ensure that the course is visually accessible for learners with color vision disabilities. Additionally, the course was designed to be compatible with screen readers and keyboard navigation to accommodate learners with mobility impairments.

Assessment and evaluation

ERG 101 includes formative assessments throughout the module, including short games and knowledge checks. In addition to the formative assessments, surveys were also sent out to learners after completing the module to gather feedback on their experience and the effectiveness of the training.

Note that as this training was not a mandatory requirement, learners were not required to make final submissions, but they were encouraged to utilize the knowledge and skills gained from the module to propose and submit their final proposals, charters, and action plans for evaluation and feedback from a subject matter expert.

success stories

Since its launch in August 2022, ERG 101 has been successfully implemented at the tech company it was built for and has led to the creation of new ERGs within the organization.

Many employees have praised the module for its engaging and interactive design, as well as its practical application in the workplace.

The module has also received positive feedback from senior leadership for its role in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at the company.

Furthermore, the success of ERG 101 has led to increased attention and investment in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives across the tech industry as a whole, demonstrating the potential for e-learning modules to effect positive change at a larger scale.
